Introduction:

Practicing as a lawyer can be extremely satisfying in many ways; perhaps you have strong emotions about social justice, or you simply want to work in a field where you can be well compensated monetarily. Therefore, as a job that will almost certainly always be needed in society, a legal career is one of the most future-proofing options. The United Kingdom has long played an important political role in global events, with English remaining one of the primary global languages of communication and the primary language for international law. Being qualified as a lawyer in the United Kingdom means you need to be perfectly prepared to converse, negotiate, and transact.

Law Degree From UK:

Law graduates in the United Kingdom have a variety of job opportunities. Many graduates practice law as solicitors or barristers with a UK law degree. It’s worth noting that each of the UK’s three jurisdictions has a distinct legal profession: solicitors (non-trial lawyers) and barristers (trial advocates). However, you cannot move between their qualifying paths, therefore you must pick whether you want to be an attorney or a barrister from the start.

  • The first stage is to take the CPE/GDL (a common practise Professional Examination/Graduate Diploma in Law) to convert your abroad law degree. Moreover, this generally takes two years but can be reduced to one year if your degree results are strong.

You need to register as a student with The Law Society of England and Wales or The Bar Council of England and Wales in the first phase,

  • The second step is to complete the “vocational stage.” After completing the preceding requirements, the qualifying road splits into two paths: the non-trial lawyer’s (solicitor’s) pathway and the court advocate’s (barrister’s).

Key requirements

  • First, become a student member of The Law Society of England and Wales.
  • A two-year Legal Practise Course (LP). If your CPE/GDL is strong, you may be able to accelerate it to one year.
  • A two-year apprenticeship is known as a “trainee contract” with a law firm. This is a compensated position. If you do not already have a visa allowing you to work in the UK, your journey ends here. No law firm would engage you unless you already had a valid work visa.
  • Acceptance and membership in The Law Society of England and Wales.
  • Total time since Step 1: 6 years
